this made me miss watching winter olympics when i was a child. motherland always kicked ass in sports and i remember walking differently after watching figuire skating or skiing, filled with pride and childish delusion of being as graceful as those beautiful mythical magical people, who dedicated their life to sport.
oh, and of course there is the snow.
you can take the girl out of the mountains but you cant the mountains out of the girl.
p.s. i predict that camera*stalker and i will be looking for some cosy place to watch the winter olympics.
some people wait for superbowl or victoria's secret fashion show or other equally exciting things. i've been waiting to see this shoot for what seems to be a very long time. i will confess, it's even on my iCAL : sunday, mcginley/rodarte/olypmics shoot for the new york times.
alas, the wait is over. please enjoy physical superiority and anti gravity skills of olympic athletes, mcginley's poetic photography and rodarte's crazy beautiful costumes (?).
i've never been someone who liked roses and let alone wore something with a rose print. i find the smell sickening, the flower boring and conventional ( please never buy me roses on any occasion) and the only thing i love about a rose is actually tearing the petals off. having said all that i am not sure how but this manoush rose print top with macrame sleeves seduced me into buying it and actually wearing it. often.
i feel like there is a lot of 70s suddenly creeping into my wardrobe. will to tell you about my secret love affair with high waist jeans soon. just as soon as they make peace with the skinnies.
oh well, never say never right? you might see me wearing wedges next.
one is a vogue editorial featuring an anna karenina-ish love affiar set in 2010, starring natalia vodianova a.k.a the most beautiful woman in the world and puff daddy (or is it p. diddy ?), the man with a biggest ego in the world. oh wait, he might have to fight kanye for that title.
second one is a lukewarm pairing of agyness deyn and orlando bloom in a campaign for me&city where they are playing happy house. or should i say trying to play.
the conclusion is simple. you cant fake chemistry, even if you are being shot by terry richardson and annie leibowitz.
p.s.i actually tried covering p.diddy with my hand and looked at the images. beautiful.
yes, yes, turkey is getting its own vogue in march. besides superficial wondering about who is going to shoot the cover and grace the cover, questions such as is it really necessary or is it ethical of conde naste to start a new edition while they are letting go of staff may have risen around blogosphere. i think that turkey does deserve its own vogue. why not? art and fashion industries are booming, istanbul has been named the cultural capital of europe 2010, and last but not least, this is a country where east meets west, asia meets europe, and past so beautifully intertwines with present and hopeful future. it could be a beautiful addition to vogue family.
hoşgeldiniz vogue turkiye!
p.s. i think the teaser cover of turkish vogue i found on fashionspot is fake. it' s kind of obvious, dont dju think? i just thought it would be fun to post it anyways.
p.p.s. i hope mert and marcus are shooting the cover. they probably are. what dju think? the duo is half turkish in the end.
ok, so i have gotten into my usual obsessive pattern - you can probably expect more turkey inspired posts. my friends are well aware of both the pattern and my love of istanbul.
this is a video from w's shoot with kate moss, shot in an anciet hammam and styled alex white (who i worship) and mert and marcus.
it's a dated video but that doesn't making it less enchanting and oh so beautiful.
i am sure you all have been there. frantically looking for that ring or necklace and scramming through pouches, boxes and in my case a very large hat box and creating a mess. unless you are like my friend patricia who knows where everything is because she is so damn organised.
i am jealous. so very jealous.
i have actually bought a very nice hand stand at traffic gallery in attempt to at least keep the rings where i can see them but have not seen it since the day of purchase. so now most of the rings and necklaces that i wear on daily basis have taken up a semi-permanent residence on a beautiful mirror i bought at basta art cafe in bastakiya. i love the vivid blue color of the wood, which makes me think of morocco and greece simultaneously, the rough uneven texture and vintage spoon and fork attached to the frame. the fork is bent into a candle holder and the spoon is there to protect the surface of your house from hot melting wax. until the day i build a gorgeous jewelry holder frame that will probably take up most of the wall and finally find out where s*uce boutique gets their beautiful see-through acrylic jewelry boxes, there will be no candle burning action for my mirror/jewelry display.
ever since i read about erich segal passing away from heart attack earlier this month, i have been watching clips of "love story" on youtube and falling in love with ali mcgraw all over again. ali mcgraw looked effortlessly cool whether she was channeling the american preppy look she was known for or the 70s boho chic, which she pulled of with ease. she loved playing with headgear , whether it was a hat ( named "ali's cap" ) or a turban and an headpiece made out of feathers, that wouldn't be out of place alexander mcqueen's fall 2009 collection.
this post inaugurates new "style icon" series on the blog, where i will share stories and images of women and man who prove that it's not what you wear, it's how you wear it.
since we were on the subject of sunglasses and middle east and fashion of course, here is something very interesting i came across on shehab hamad's blog.
bq ( which comes from burqa - image below ) is an eye-wear brand from dubai which took inspiration from face-veil worn by women of persian gulf and translated it in contemporary design, retaining the traditionally and cultural value, whilst looking stylish.
as shehab wrote on his blog , it would be great to see a contemporarizing redesign of the burqa that turns it from controversial symbol of retardedness to future fashion icon. amen to that.
unlike most fashion loving girls (and boys) in the middle east who probably have as many glasses as shoes, i normally find one that i really love and wear it it either breaks and gets lost. since my faithful persols have gone missing and were kind of broken, i am on the look out for a new pair to love and scratch and break.
and look what the cat brought in.... alexander wang's first eyewear collection for linda farrow. this boy's got the midas touch.
i hate those ugly latop bags. so do you, i am sure. most of them look clinical and geeky and downright ugly. is it difficult to make a beautiful and long-lasting laptop case/bag? i resorted to carrying my macbook well, as a book, with no cover or just wrapped up in a pashmina or scarf. which is very very dangerous, considering how hopelessly clumsy i am. so far both macbook and i are unharmed and i just learned, while flipping though russian vogue's january issue, that mulberry created a whole collection for apple products!
my favorite is the iconic bayswater bag now has a special compartment with padding to protect your laptop/iphone/ipod , complete with eyelets for the headphone access and there are multitudes of other bags and laptop envelops.
so remember how majority of swiss voted against minarets and prompted a heated debate all over the world? well, now minaret or to be more accurate, a mosque have become a fashion accessory.
here is an image of a dj delay at swiss music awards wearing the infamous mosque alarm clock, so loved by tourists.
i am trying to keep an open mind and still don't know what to make of it. thoughts?
i owe my first laugh of the day to this! as much as the us, simple people and some designers, love fashion blogs, some in fashion industry are still not fans.
i have written about rana mikdashi earlier on the blog and wanted to share with you her collection for ashi.
rana puts a lot of though and research into her pieces and this is what makes them so special, besides the obvious craftsmanship and talent. there is a thought behind every piece and always a story.
she is what i would call a conceptual jewelry designer. i can't wait to see what she come up with next!
